A rebellious leader or any leader for that matter know how important self-care is to their wellbeing. They are always utilizing a self-care ritual from their toolbox. For me, this is a non-negotiable part of living a life I truly love. Being a kickass leader requires that you consistently take care of your body, mind and spirit. You only get one body so take care of it like it’s your best friend and temple!
Below I’ve listed some things that are in my toolbox. I have listed things that take 5 minutes for when I need a quick recharge or things I do when I have an hour or two. You can use one by itself or lump them all together for an EXTREME self-care day!
Some things that are in my self- care toolkit that help me feel sane, recharged and in my Fierceness:
Salt Baths/Scrub: I love using a scrub that my Reiki practitioner introduced me to. The intention behind it is to wash away any negative energy I picked up during the day. The mixtures is part coconut oil, sea salt and a few drops of lavender or any kind of essential oil to your liking. I am currently obsessed with Lavender and Bergamont (the citrus smell is addicting). I use lavender when I need to relax and Bergamont when I need a quick pick me up. I love the way the coconut oil moisturizes my skin and the salt exfoliates. I set my intention to rid myself and my aura of negative energy and let it wash away down the drain.
Foot Soak: Soaking your feet in a basin of hot water and Epsom salt plus a few drop of essential oil of your liking. This helps pull toxins out of your body and is great way to detoxify your body, mind and spirit. Epsom salt has some great healing properties as well.
Studies have shown that magnesium and sulfate are both readily absorbed through the skin, making Epsom salt baths an easy and ideal way to enjoy the amazing health benefits. Magnesium plays a number of roles in the body including regulating the activity of over 325 enzymes, reducing inflammation, helping muscle and nerve function and helping to prevent artery hardening. Sulfates help improve the absorption of nutrients, flush toxins and help ease migraine headaches. [Source]
Another healing bath that I have recently been introduced to is an Alchemy bath which is 2 cups of Epsom salt, 2 cups baking soda and essential oil. Soak in the bath for 20 -30 minutes. This is used to detoxify, clear your mind and just get rid of the yucky stuff. It’s best to do this bath when right before bedtime or when you have a few hours of free time. As it will make you very relaxed and you will sleep like a baby.
Note: Drink plenty of water after an Epsom salt bath or soak .
Exercise – falls under all three; Mind, Body and Spirit. Simple Movement like walking or dancing can help you get connected more connected to your body and spirit, plus clear your mind. I find that after any kind of exercise I feel like I can dominate the world. My mind is clear from any shit talking and the ideas just flow. Exercise also helps me connect with Spirit and feel at one with the Universe. Just a simple walk and being in nature can help me accomplish all three in a short amount of time.
Meditation – ok I am going to be straight up honest with you here, this is a challenge for me. To sit in silence and not move is a recipe for disaster for me! So I have had to find other creative ways to quiet my monkey mind and be in silence. A great App that truly breaks down mediation into nice bite size pieces and the guy has a cute British accent (I’m a sucker for an accent) is Headspace. I also have certain crystals that I will meditate with to open me up more to my intention. Some of my favorite crystals to meditate with are Rose quartz (love, self and others), Amethyst and XXX .
Journaling – this helps me get all the chitter chatter out of my head and on to paper. I call this my brain dump. After a while the mind starts to calm and my REAL voice comes through and some hidden gems come thru. It can be fun to look back at old journals and see how far I’ve come. I also will do some automatic writing to get thoughts from Spirit.
Essential Oils – Never leave home without them! I am a EO junkie. My brand of choice is Young Living but I don’t discriminate as long as it’s a high grade oil. Some of my go to favorites are White Angelica and Lavender. I diffuse Lavender during the night to help me sleep better. I even take my diffuser on the road with me when I’m in stuffy hotel rooms.
Prayer – a few minutes in the morning to set my intention for the day and to thank God/Source/Universe for waking me up to see another day. In the evening I will say the Lord’s prayer and make a gratitude list of 5-10 things that I’m grateful took place during the day.
Reading/Podcast – I love to read and I’m addicted to podcasts. Reading is a great way to obtain access to so many things in the world that you might not be readily available in your daily life. Reading takes me to another place or helps me learn things about a particular subject, person or idea. I can never get enough of reading. Podcast are another great way to get access to a person or idea that you never would in your daily routine. Some of my favorite podcasts are Jess Lively, Lewis Howes, School of Greatness and Laura Yamin, Say Yes
“Me” Day – This usually includes some kind of self care like massage, facial or mani/pedi, Reiki or some kind of energy clearing. Energy clearing helps me clear out all the gunk and reset. These types of things help me to destress, relax and refocus.
Music- is a huge part of my self-care toolkit. Depending on my mood I will throw on some Beyonce and connect with my inner Goddess, Prince (who doesn’t love them some Prince), Mary J. Blige, old scholl R&B from the 90’s, some old school rock and roll from the 80’s, Maxwell, Kid Rock, Usher and maybe even some trap music! Like I mentioned, it all depends on my mood.
Radical Self love and Self Care are key to being a Leader of your life. When you truly love yourself and know who you are nothing can shake you. It might knock you on your ass for a minute or two but you will see the lesson in it and come back stronger Some of my favorite blogs for resources and ideas about upping my self love and self care game are Gala Darling and Your Spirit Sparkle.
