Last year attending an event I ran into Nikki Brocco. I couldn’t help but notice her and her hair. Upon talking to her I knew that their was something unique about her. We kept in touch via Facebook and IG and I felt I really got to know what she was all about. But it wasn’t until I sat down with her at the Self Help Socialite event in February that I realized how much Nikki and I had in common when it came to all things “witchy” and magical. We could have talked for hours! She is definitely a leader doing things her own way.
Rebellious Leader : Who are you and what is the magic you bring to the world?
Nikki Brocco: Who am I? Simple answer: I am me. Detailed answer: I’m a ball of wonderous contradictions, forever unfolding into the rapture of becoming and evolving, I’m a deeply compassionate rebel and I’m also utterly …human and flawed. The magic I bring is what I call “Sensitive Witchery” which is my name for the practice of using our “Intuition”….I’m a Highly Sensitive person meaning I am more deeply and quickly aware of what’s going on around me than the average person…also meaning I feel a lot of shit, a lot of the time and I’ve had to teach myself how to harness that gift. I believe that all women are born witches (screw proper labels). We all have magic powers. And one of them is our Intuition. The way we get to use our Intuition is by being fully self expressed.
RL: What lights you up about your work & the world?
NB: I offer a space of permission to be your damn self. I really think a lot of pain that we experience throughout our lives comes from simply not doing what the fuck we want to do. I felt suffocated for years (even in the self help industry, ironically) with a sense of feeling like I couldn’t just be who I was and follow my feelings or my gut. “Be you! Oh but not like that, clients won’t like that.”. I love that the work I do facilitates an experience that is an unfolding for my clients and for my followers. It’s an unfolding and unlearning of all the crap we’ve picked up, so that we can find that inner sense feeling of “I’m home”. And then share that with the world. I love that what I do supports others in being a little more of who they actually are, everyday. Whether it’s through coaching, or learning something about yourself through astrology or embracing your own sense of style…I get to do something that gives energy to that mission.
RL: What does being a rebellious leader mean to you?
NB: The world will be healed by women and men who have given themselves the person to be fully expressed in any damn way they please. As long as you ain’t maliciously hurting some one, then you’re a damn good rebellious leader by just being who the fuck you are.
RL: What quote or mantra do you live by?
NB: “I felt at once horribly vulnerable and yet completely safe.” It’s actually a quote from the Outlander series of books. I live by it, because I believe that’s how love feels. How your Soul feels when it’s turned on my something. How Intuition feels when you listen to it. It gives me the chills.
RL: What have you learned about yourself in the past 5 years?
NB: That being human is not so bad. When you start reading into spirituality and all that jazz, you tend to want to just…I don’t know…get the fuck off Earth and play in the Esoteric realms forever. It’s painful to “awaken” at first. But learning how to embrace the part of me that is so utterly human and flawed and full of contractions and duality and walk among those inbetween places…is what life is about and it’s what I’m here to share and master (says my Lunar Node Astrology! Hehe). I know that life is not just about “things” and “stuff” but I also love things and stuff, because they are human and material and grounding. I love all things magic, and ephemeral and mysterious because it connects me to something so much grander and deeper but sometimes you can get carried away. I’ve learned that finding a common ground is possible. I’ve also learned …JUST GO WITH YOUR GUT. For me, when I look back at the times my “logic” thinking brain steered me…yes I learned a ton of stuff…but 5 years later the things I first desired then but convinced myself out of …are the same damn things I want now, after I’ve shed all the conditioning I’ve picked up. Ain’t that ironic as fuck? Go with what you fucking feel, for fucks sake.
RL: Who are your mentors and sources of inspiration?
NB: I’m a huge fan of art and creativity as the back door to spirituality. Music is huge for me. It gets me into a feeling space super quick. It gets me inspired and imaginative. I’ve been loving Florence and the Machine, Halsey, Birdy, Chelsea Wolfe, Meg Myer…all very badass femmes. The rapper Grieves gets me pumped. They make me feel all the things and that’s where I need to be in order to do shit. I also love watching amazing movies or TV shows to get my soul turned on. The TV series Outlander has been HUGE. It’s based in the 1740’s Scotland. The landscapes make you want to cry, the authentic fashion and set design design is to die for, and the romantic story line makes you swoon.
Some of my favorite mentors are people like Danielle LaPorte, Gala Darling, and Ash Ambridge of the Middle Finger Project and Carolyn Elliot. I love people who are not “cookie cutter” …all light and rainbows. I love edge and sass and cursing and darkness as a way of “enlightened empowerment.”….So Scorpio of me, I know!
Astrology is deeply inspiring to me. Reading amazing horoscopes and where the planets are in the sky always helps me connect to the Earth and the Stars and my own sense of intuition.
RL: Best piece of advice ever received?
NB: “You are just you.”…That’s not exactly advice I received but it’s a dear to my heart compliment I’ve heard from a few people directed at me. It’s weird to hear at first, but when it happens…I know I’m “on path”. I’m doing something right. And I take that as advice from the Universe, and my people are the vessels to deliver that. I’ve also received the advice “Don’t convince them, own it.”….It’s something I use to anchor myself when I’m feeling nervous or uncomfortable, or not like myself. Am I trying to convince them? How can I just OWN this? Very useful in all situations!
RL: How can magic & astrology enhance our daily lives and business?
NB: I’m a fan of everyday magic. Meaning, connecting with your own intuition and being in a ritual and practice of listening to it even if it seems small. That’s really the most powerful magic we can take part in. And listening to your intuition trumps listening to something outside of yourself, every time. You’ll FEEL better even in crappy situations because you’ve honored and respected your inner voice. That connection will guide you and your decisions.
I’m a huge fan of setting intentions, reading tarot and playing with my crystals and candles so I do try to do that on a weekly basis because having something tangible can bring me back into present if I’m feeling scattered.
There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t read about Astrology anymore. I follow the moon cycles. Since I’m so sensitive to energy, I can be moody. Reading about where the planets are and the mythology and symbology behind it really helps me understand and accept all the different complexities that are swirling within me.
Understanding my natal birth chart has been so incredibly powerful in supporting my efforts to know myself better, my inner workings, my psyche. I’ve been able to tap into and use parts of myself through Astrology that have previously been frustrating for me. Learning that I had Libra Rising sign helped me understand WHY I always try to be the voice of reason and am hellbent on fairness, even though I have this Scorpion fire Sun raging inside of me too. I’ve also got a Virgo moon, which helped me understand why I can be OCD in relationships.
Magic and Astrology are tools that support your connection to Intuition. It’s like really great sexy lube. It gets you going and then you take it from there : P
5 Things you can’t live without?
Astrology – it’s so helpful for managing my highly sensitive energy and it’s totally infused with implemental magic.
Outlander – I don’t know how I “even could” before this show and book series blew my imagination open with its lush imagery, its feminist undertones and a love story that’s one amazing relationship to learn from.
Family – I don’t know what would have happened to me without their continuous support. Even thought they don’t totally get me, they try! I’m immensely grateful to have that.
Dark Chocolate Coconut Bark Thins. – They’re the most satisfying goodie ever. I eat it everyday hehe!
Music. – The right album or song has gotten me through periods of darkness and helped healed me along the way. I went through a massive breakup last summer and the song “Let it go” by James Bay was on repeat and became a mantra.
